Can I use Backup without having access to an FTP server?

No. Backup requires an FTP server to function. There is currently no other way to backup your files.

There is software available to allow a computer to become an FTP server. If you have a computer with enough disk space to backup the files you need, you may install software such as Cerberus FTP (http://www.cerberusftp.com) to setup an FTP server on that computer.

For smaller backups, you may be able to use your ISP's FTP server. There are also other public servers available as well. These are all compatible with Backup.

Support for network shares and other backup devices is planned for future releases.
